What Are Classic Baby Names Explained

This index identifies Classic baby names with substantial historical continuity that remain meaningfully present in recent records. Classic names are distinguished by their established long-term usage rather than by a specific revival or recent-growth pattern.

A name qualifies when it appears in at least 35% of its available historical years, reaches its historical peak no later than 2018, and either averages at least 10 births per year during 2021–2025 or retains at least 1.5% of its historical peak volume during that recent period.

Names such as Jennifer, Ryan, Ashley meet these conditions because their birth records demonstrate both meaningful historical persistence and continued modern usage. A Classic classification does not imply that a name is currently among the most popular; it indicates a durable usage pattern across time.

For the complete historical persistence, peak-year, recent-usage, and threshold definitions, see our Name Style Methodology.
