What Is the Middle Name Directory?
The Middle Name Directory is Namedary's collection of 105,740 individual middle-name pages, created for looking up and understanding middle names one at a time. Each middle name has its own profile with information about its characteristics, popularity, gender usage, and how it is used with first names.
Unlike Middle Names Collections, which group middle names together for discovery by gender and other criteria, the Middle Name Directory focuses on the individual middle name itself. Use the directory to look up a specific middle name and explore the information available about it, including its characteristics, usage, popularity, and name combinations.
What Can You Learn About a Middle Name?
Each middle name has its own page with information about its characteristics, popularity, gender usage, and first-name combinations.

Middle Name Data
Data Sources
Namedary's middle-name database is derived from large-scale full-name records of real people recorded in national population data from the United States. Each source record contains a first name, middle name, last name, gender. Namedary extracts the middle names from these full-name records to analyze observed middle-name usage patterns.
The database currently contains 105,740 middle names, including 13,760 boy middle names, 37,175 girl middle names, and 16,231 unisex middle names. These categories are based on observed usage in the underlying population data.
Data Processing
Namedary first filters middle-name values from the source records and retains only names consisting of letters A–Z. Names containing diacritics, punctuation, numbers, or other non-letter characters are excluded. The retained middle names are normalized to a consistent representation before their usage is analyzed.
Namedary retains middle names with at least two observed people using the middle name. This threshold removes extremely low-frequency middle names while maintaining broad coverage of middle names found in the source data.
Relationship Thresholds
For each retained middle name, Namedary records the first names that have actually occurred with that middle name in the source data. Each first-name/middle-name relationship has a frequency count representing the number of observed people with that combination.
First-name/middle-name relationships are retained when the combination has been observed at least two times, meaning that at least two people in the source data have been recorded with the same first name and middle name combination. One-off combinations are excluded to reduce extremely low-frequency associations.
These thresholds do not mean that less frequent middle names or first-name/middle-name combinations are invalid or do not exist. They determine which observations provide enough repeated evidence for inclusion in Namedary's middle-name relationship data.
Middle Name Gender Classification Methodology
Namedary determines a middle name's primary gender classification from aggregated recorded birth data. The calculation uses every available male and female birth record in which the name appears as a middle name, across all supported data sources and years.
This method measures how a name has been used specifically as a middle name. It does not use first-name gender data to determine the classification of a middle name.
Classification Method
For each middle name, Namedary adds all recorded male and female births, then calculates the percentage of male usage from the combined total.

| Baby/All | Baby represents all names in the directory, regardless of gender. It includes boy, girl, unisex, and names with unknown or unspecified gender usage. No gender-based filtering is applied to this category. |
Unknown Gender: Fewer than three recorded births, or no gender information is available. A name may still be assigned a gender classification on its individual detail page even when its recorded usage is limited to one or two births. However, gender-specific lists include only names with sufficient recorded usage to meet the required gender threshold for the corresponding Boy, Girl, or Unisex category. Names that do not meet these thresholds are shown only in Baby/all-gender lists.
Namedary uses a conservative 75% threshold before assigning a middle name to the Boy or Girl categories. Names with substantial recorded usage by both sexes remain classified as Unisex rather than being assigned to a single category.
Middle names with fewer than three recorded births are classified as Unknown because the available evidence is too limited for a reliable classification.
How This Classification Is Used
The classification is used to build separate Boy, Girl, and Unisex middle-name profiles for the suggestion tool. The Baby profile does not apply a gender restriction and uses the full middle-name pool.
Gender classifications are recalculated automatically when new supported birth data becomes available. If updated recorded usage crosses a classification threshold, the middle name's classification is updated.
Middle Name Popularity Methodology
Observed Middle Name Usage
Namedary measures middle-name popularity using observed usage in its underlying population data. For each middle name, the recorded male and female counts are combined to determine its total observed usage.
This measure reflects how frequently a middle name is represented among the people included in the dataset. It is not based on the number of first-name combinations, pronunciation, meaning, or any manually assigned popularity category.
Popularity Distribution
Middle names with positive observed usage are included in the popularity distribution. Names with no recorded usage are not treated as evidence of a particular frequency level and do not affect the percentile distribution.
The eligible middle names are ordered from the lowest to the highest total observed usage. Popularity is then determined from each name's relative position within this distribution.
Midrank Percentile Calculation
Because multiple middle names can have the same observed usage, Namedary uses a midrank percentile rather than assigning different positions to tied values. Middle names with identical observed usage therefore receive the same percentile.
For a middle name with observed usage x, its percentile is calculated as:
Percentile = (Number of names with lower usage + 0.5 × Number of names with equal usage) ÷ Number of names with positive observed usage × 100The midrank places a tied group at the midpoint of the positions it occupies in the ordered distribution. This ensures that names with the same observed usage are treated consistently, including when a popularity boundary falls within a group of tied values.
Popularity Levels
Each middle name with positive observed usage is assigned one of five popularity levels according to its percentile:

These boundaries are percentile thresholds, not fixed quotas. The methodology does not require a predetermined percentage of middle names to fall into each level. The resulting distribution depends on the actual observed-usage data and the presence of tied values.
How to Interpret Middle Name Popularity
A higher popularity level indicates that a middle name has greater observed usage relative to other middle names in the dataset. A lower level indicates relatively less observed usage.
Popularity is therefore a relative statistical measure. It does not represent a fixed number of people, a percentage of the population, or the number of different first names associated with a middle name.
Names with no observed usage are excluded from the percentile distribution. If the underlying population data is updated, a middle name's percentile and popularity level may change as its position relative to other middle names changes.
First Name–Middle Name Relationship Methodology
Observed First Name–Middle Name Relationships
Namedary provides lists based directly on the first-name and middle-name combinations observed in the underlying population records.
For each first name and middle name, the relationship data records how many source records contain that specific combination. Across the dataset, Namedary currently contains 2,174,717 observed first-name/middle-name relationships representing 6,993,624 source records. This allows Namedary to identify names that have been repeatedly observed together, rather than generating combinations from naming rules or phonetic similarity.
How the List Is Ordered
These lists are ordered primarily by the observed relationship frequency between each first name and middle name. A higher relationship count means that the combination appears more often in the underlying source records.
First-name or middle-name popularity may then be used as a secondary ordering factor when appropriate, helping distinguish names with similar observed relationship counts.
The same relationship data supports both directions of the lists. Depending on the selected name, the list can answer either of the following questions:

How Namedary Finds First Names That Go Well With a Middle Name
The relationship between a middle name and a first name can be influenced by how the two names sound and fit together when spoken as a full name. Namedary therefore looks beyond individual name characteristics and examines observable patterns in first names that have been recorded with a given middle name.
Namedary's Find First Names That Go Well With a Middle Name tool uses these observed patterns to identify useful structural and phonetic criteria for exploring first names. It does not apply a fixed naming formula or assume that a particular type of first name is inherently better suited to a middle name.
The pronunciation features used in the analysis, including syllable counts, phonemes, stress patterns and length count, are derived from Namedary's pronunciation analysis methodology. See Name Characteristics & Pronunciation Methodology for details on how these properties are determined.
The underlying relationships are recorded in the middlename_firstname dataset. Each middle-name and first-name relationship has a total value representing its observed frequency. These totals are used as weights when calculating the distributions, so more frequently recorded combinations have a greater influence on the resulting patterns.
Patterns Observed in First Names
For each middle name and gender group, Namedary examines several measurable characteristics of the first names associated with it. Each characteristic is evaluated independently so that the resulting evidence can describe different aspects of how first names have been paired with the middle name.
The objective is to represent the strongest patterns found in the recorded combinations, rather than to define a universal rule for what constitutes a good first-name and middle-name combination.
1. Syllable Pattern
Namedary first examines the number of syllables in the first names recorded with the middle name. For each middle-name syllable pattern, the system calculates a weighted distribution of first-name syllable counts using the observed relationship totals.
The resulting syllable values are ranked according to their weighted frequency, allowing the most strongly represented first-name syllable patterns to be identified.
2. Stress Pattern
The analysis then considers the phonetic stress pattern of the first names associated with the middle name. The observed relationships are weighted by their recorded totals, and the resulting stress patterns are ordered by frequency.
This provides information about the rhythmic characteristics of first names that have been observed with the middle name, rather than treating stress as a secondary consequence of syllable count.
3. Name Length Pattern
Written length is analyzed separately from pronunciation. Namedary compares the middle name's length_count with the written lengths of its associated first names and calculates a weighted distribution for each relevant middle-name length.
This distinction allows the tool to capture patterns that syllable count cannot fully represent. First names with the same number of syllables may still differ substantially in their written length.
4. First-to-Middle Sound Boundary
Namedary also examines the sound transition between the first name and the middle name. Because the first name precedes the middle name, the analysis considers the ending phoneme of the first name in relation to the starting phoneme of the middle name.
A broader boundary classification is also calculated based on whether the first name ends with a vowel or consonant sound and whether the middle name begins with a vowel or consonant sound. This captures general vowel/consonant transitions alongside the more specific phoneme combinations.
Selecting the Dominant Patterns
The analysis does not retain every observed value for every characteristic. Instead, Namedary ranks the available values by their weighted observed frequency and retains the strongest values until they provide approximately 70% coverage of the distribution, subject to the configured maximum number of values.
This approach allows the evidence to represent a group of strong patterns when appropriate. For example, if two first-name syllable counts together account for most of the weighted observations, both can be retained rather than discarding the second value simply because it is less frequent than the first.
The generated metadata records the selected values together with their percentages, coverage, and weighted observation counts. This preserves the statistical basis used by the middle-name page when presenting the available patterns and constructing its filtering options.
How the Strongest Observed Patterns Are Used
Namedary separates the broader statistical evidence from the default Strongest Observed Patterns used when the first-name finder is initially loaded. Although several values may qualify as strong evidence for a particular characteristic, the default state uses the single strongest observed value for each criterion.
These default values are stored as individual where conditions in the generated metadata. They provide a concrete starting point for finding first names associated with the selected middle name.
The default combination therefore represents the strongest observed syllable, stress, length, and first-to-middle sound patterns for that middle name and gender group. It is a statistical starting point, not a rule that excludes other possible combinations.
The wider evidence remains available so that users can modify the criteria and explore additional patterns supported by the recorded data.
Gender-Specific and All-Names Results
Namedary generates these statistics separately for boys, girls, unisex names, and the all-names group. The gender classification of first names follows Namedary's Gender Classification methodology.
For the boy, girl, and unisex groups, only first names belonging to the corresponding gender group are used when calculating the distributions. The all-names group does not impose a gender restriction and therefore reflects the complete set of observed first-name and middle-name relationships.
This allows the same middle name to produce different first-name patterns depending on the selected gender population, while keeping the underlying calculation method consistent.
From Observed Patterns to First-Name Discovery
The purpose of the methodology is to turn observed middle-name and first-name relationships into useful criteria for exploration. Namedary does not determine that a particular first name is objectively better suited to a middle name.
Instead, the Strongest Observed Patterns provide the initial criteria for the first-name finder. Users can then broaden or narrow the results by changing syllable count, stress pattern, written length, sound-boundary characteristics, and other available filters.
This creates a balance between data-based guidance and user-directed exploration. The tool starts with patterns supported by recorded combinations while still allowing users to discover first names that match alternative observed characteristics.
Since the calculations are based on weighted relationships in the middlename_firstname dataset, middle names with similar observed first-name pairings can naturally produce similar results. This reflects similarities present in the underlying data rather than imposing artificial distinctions between middle names.
