It's a nice name. I generally think of it as a surname, but in Southern US a lot of boys are given their mother's maiden name as their first name. Similar to Allen and Lee in that manner. I probably wouldn't name a boy this name if his surname could also be used as a first name. It can get confusing over which is his first name.
