This index identifies Retro baby names whose recorded usage is strongly associated with an earlier period and has since declined to relatively low levels without showing a meaningful recent revival. The classification focuses on the shape of the historical usage curve rather than on cultural assumptions about what is considered retro.
A qualifying name must have a historical peak between 1940 and 1995 with a peak volume of at least 25 births. Its recent average must remain below 3% of the historical peak and below 50 births per year, while 2023–2025 usage must be no more than 20% higher than the 2020–2022 average.
Names such as Sherry, Debbie, Kristin are included because their historical records show an older period of strongest usage followed by sustained decline and no statistically meaningful recent rebound. Retro therefore represents a measurable historical pattern, not simply a name that is culturally perceived as old-fashioned.
