I personally think it's an odd choice to name your kid after a group of people. I'm really referring to non-Cree people calling their kids this. Not sure if a Cree person would actually name their child "Cree", it's not my business. I've also heard that this is not what they call themselves, however I'm not Cree so I wouldn't know their preferred name. With all that being said, I do think as a given name it sounds a bit strange. Stranger than that, I first heard of it as a given name on a list of "nature themed boy names". The list also contained names such as Stone and Leaf.

The Native American tribe that we call “Cree” don’t even call themselves Cree. To me, it seems like a very odd description for this name to say it only comes from the Cree tribe.
