These roots generally encompass meanings related to nobility, protective strength, or defensive capability. The Greek name Alexander specifically denotes defender of men, while Germanic forms often involve noble or bright elements. The proliferation of this name corresponds to the broad historical preference for creating affectionate, abbreviated versions of more formal, multi-syllabic names.
Meaning Comments
- Girl_pkerzzz: I use it as a nickname for Alexandra.
- Wicked_bow_1: I know an Allie but it is not short for Alison like most people presume, it is short for Alexandra. I have not heard of any Alison's being shortened to Allie but some of my other friends called Alexandra shorten it to this or Ali. I think that it is prettier than Alex because that sounds quite masculine but this is more feminine!
- Xxcaptian_ax: It is also used as a pet form of Alexandra.
