The root of the word can be divided in two:
The first root, Gil, can be either from the old norse "geisli" that means "pole" (part of a weapon), from the langobardic "gisil" that means "shaft of an arrow", or from the ancient germanic "gisal(a)" that means "pledge", "hostage" or "descendant".
The second root, Bert, can be either from the old norse "bjartr", from the old german/old saxon "beraht", or from the gothic "bairht", all of them means "light", "bright" or "shining"

I love Gilbert! It’s so old fashioned (which is a good thing!) and down to earth, innocent and happy sounding! The only thing that might hold me back from using it isn’t that it’s ‘an ugly old name’ but that it might be strange to name my son after my childhood crush Gilbert Blythe. Lol. But Gilbert Blythe was such a good character really, he had great character development, I think he would make a good namesake. And I honestly cannot resist the nicknames Gil, Bert/Bertie or Gib/Gibs. (Name of the day 08/26/23)

Gilbert is a really nice name and I love it. It sounds classic and pure to me and the nickname Gil, is so cute and adorable. I don't know why do people hate this lovely name when it's beautiful and kinda upperclass. It gives a vibe like a clever and handsome boy and also is a nice name for manhood. The meaning is also nice and gorgeous. If you think of this name, you will find out how nice it is.
