How We Count Syllables in Middle Names
Syllable count is one of the characteristics we use to organize and compare middle names. Because the number of syllables is determined by pronunciation, our classification is based on phonetic data rather than simply counting letters in a name.
1. Pronunciation Data
We first look for a recorded pronunciation in the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, which provides phoneme and stress information that can be used to determine the syllable structure of a name.
2. Additional Name Coverage
When a middle name is not represented in the primary pronunciation source, we check OpenDictData for additional phonetic information. This helps extend coverage to names that may be less common or represented in different linguistic datasets.
3. Estimated Pronunciation
Some middle names have limited or no dictionary pronunciation data, particularly uncommon or newly encountered names. For these cases, a Grapheme-to-Phoneme (G2P) model estimates the pronunciation from the written form, and the resulting phonetic representation is used to determine the syllable count.
The resulting syllable counts are used throughout this directory to group and filter middle names, making it easier to find names with a particular length and rhythm. The pronunciation source for each name is retained in our data.
