I love my name. It is a beautiful name. I was born in Failsworth, England. My parents used to go on holiday in Wales and my mom fell in love with the name there. It is spelled Glenyse with an "e". That was because when my Dad signed my birth certificate he added a little flourish at the end of the name "Glenys" and the birth registrar entered it as an "e." My mom always told me my name meant "of the glen" and "beautiful." My grandfather was a gunner on the battleship "Rodney" during World War II. I was scheduled to be Christened on the ship in the Spring of 1945. The day before, though, the ship was commissioned to join the fleet that eventually sank the German ship, Bismarck, contributing to the end of the War. Teachers throughout my life have had trouble pronouncing my name, especially with the "e." Now I tell people to say this little poem when trying to remember my name, "Dennis the Menace played Tennis with Glenyse!"

I hate pronouncing my name, people usually ask me to repeat it. My name is spelt Glenys and I find it a bit of a tongue tie for me. I have know idea why my parents called me Glenys. I never answer to Glen. I was brought up that my name was never to be shortened and it has stuck with me. I totally love it when people call me Gladys and I will not answer to it, even though I know they are talking to me.
