This was the name of my great-grandfather, who immigrated to the U.S. from Italy after WWI. While this was his birth name, from what I understand he usually went by Sylvester when he got to the U.S. Personally, I don't see how an Anglicization of his name was so necessary, since the two are very similar in sound.
I doubt I would ever use this, personally, but it's a cool name to have in one's family tree. I do find the feminine variants (Silvestra & Sylvestra) intriguing, however.
