This name derives from Old High German name “Mahthilt, Mahthildis”, composed of two Ancient Germanic elements: “*mahti- / *maginą” (ability, power, might, main) plus “*hildiz” (battle, fight).
1) Saint Mathilda (~ 895–968) was the wife of King Henry I of Germany, the first ruler of the Saxon Ottonian (or Liudolfing) dynasty, thereby Duchess consort of Saxony from 912 and German Queen from 919 until 936.
2) Matilda of Flanders (~1031–1083) was the wife of William the Conqueror and, as such, Queen consort of the Kingdom of England.
