This name derives from the Anglo-Saxon male personal name “Wynstan”, first recorded since 1303 as a surname “Wynston and Winstone”, composed of two Old English elements: “wynn” (joy) plus “stan” (stone).

As a surname, it was borne by Sarah Winston (1660–1744), who married into the Churchill family and was later known as Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough.
