Not sure how much the media term influenced this name. It's one of many "new" names which definitely hit big in Utah with its large Latter Day Saint (Mormon) community before it got big elsewhere. In 2012 22% of all girls named Indie and 20% of those named Indy in the USA were born in Utah. In 2021 the name had boomed all over the country, but 10% of those named Indy and 9% of those named Indie were Utah babies. If you combine the spellings Indie ranked 76th as a name for girls born in Utah in 2021. Maybe it's my stereotype, but I'm not sure "independence" is a quality LDS parents would necessarily want a daughter to have. On the other hand, people in Utah would probably be more familiar with "Indie" in its media slang meaning because of the prominence of the Sundance Film Festival there every year.

Indie can also be used as a diminutive of Indigo or other names beginning with a similar sound.
Conclusion

Hippie-in-a-bad-way white-people-with-dreadlocks name, and would not work on an adult. That's just my opinion.
Better if it's a nickname for Belinda, Indigo or Lucinda.

My name is Indie. I think it goes nicely with my middle name which is Rose (Indie Rose) I see why others don't like it, but it's all I've ever known so I never thought anything negative about it. It was just "my name". Unfortunately, it is getting really popular and anyone born from 2018-2022 is going to have at least a few other Indie's in their grade. There are a few spelling variations. Indy, Indi, Indee, Indie, and I've even seen Endie before which I personally don't like. My favorite spelling is Indy because it looks so pretty written on paper. But, the spelling I n d I e has been my name for years now and I wouldn't change it.
