This was actually originally a female name. It is an Anglo-Norman feminine form of Elias. It went out of use, but survived as a matronymic. It became popular in 16th-century England to use the mother's maiden name as a first name, and that is how it became a masculine name.

People using Elliott for girls because it starts with Ellie are ridiculous. There's so many girl names that use Ellie as a nickname, like Elizabeth, Eleanor, Eliza, etc. Use those and stop taking all the boy names.

You can't "take" a name; a name is not a possession. Elliott started out as a surname, not a boy's name, though most of its history as a given name has been as a boy's name. Also, just because a few girls are named Elliott doesn't mean the name can't be a boy's name still. The people who name their daughters Elliott clearly don't care that most other Elliotts will be boys, so why should parents of male Elliotts care if there are some girls with their son's name out there? While you may prefer Eleanor or Eliza for a girl, not everyone will have the same style and opinions as you. There are way worse names people can, will and have given their daughters, and I personally don't think Elliott is all THAT terrible on a girl.
