The modern form Alice and its variation represents the short form of “Adelais”, which derives from the Germanic name Adalhaid / Adalhaidis, composed of two elements: “*aþalaz” (noble, nobleman, aristocratic, eminent, glorious, excellent) plus “*haiduz” (kind, sort, appearance, personality, character, manner, way).
