This name derives from the Scottish “Aberdeen”, composed of two elements: Old Welsh “*od-ber > Aber-” (confluence of waters, river mouth) plus the Scottish Gaelic “Don” (Don ‘river’), recorded by the 2nd-century AD cosmographer Ptolemy of Alexandria († ~168) as “Devona (Δηουανα)”, meaning “goddess”.

In turn, the name means “at the mouth of the Don”.The Aberdeen area has seen human settlement for at least 8,000 years.

The city began as two separate burghs: Old Aberdeen at the mouth of the river Don; and New Aberdeen, a fishing and trading settlement, where the Denburn waterway entered the river Dee estuary.
